Greig City Academy (GCA), the high-achieving London secondary school, is celebrating the success of gaining the Cyber Essentials accreditation thanks to help from Comtec and its certification partner RightCue.

Achieving the Cyber Essentials accreditation shows that an organisation’s cybersecurity defences have been reviewed against an established benchmark provided by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). As a well-regarded educational institution, known for its commitment to STEM subjects, attaining the Cyber Essentials standard was important for GCA to demonstrate that it protects the information of its staff and 1,200 students, and sets an example for the wider community in Haringey.

Comtec engaged with GCA to understand its current IT landscape, review infrastructure and networks with its internal IT team, and perform a gap assessment against the Cyber Essentials requirements.

“It was clear that the IT team was already following good security practices,” recalls Duncan Woods, Comtec Business Development Manager. “However, we did identify a few crucial areas of improvement around policies. We then worked to introduce the changes during the half-term holidays to minimise disruption.”

“The final piece of the jigsaw was to ask RightCue, our Cyber Essentials certification partner, to review the responses and provide an independent assessment. The result was that all the outstanding issues were resolved and GCA was awarded the Cyber Essentials certification.”

Staff at GCA are understandably delighted with achieving the Cyber Essentials benchmark, as it reflects positively on the approach of its internal IT team and inspires confidence among existing and potential students, parents and staff.

“We are proud to achieve this certification, and grateful to the support of Comtec to help fine-tune our approach to come into line with NCSC best practice,” said George Salambassi, Network Manager at GCA. “Now that we know that our security baseline is good, we can aim to deliver resilience against targeted and more complex threats.”
